Sputnik 1 is not the Earth’s largest satellite (that distinction goes to the Moon), but it is the first artificial satellite to be launched from Earth. The Soviet Union put Sputnik into low-earth orbit on October 4, 1957 from what is now the Baikonur Cosmodrome, and this was a pivotal first step into humankind’s journey towards the stars.
